| Term/Abbreviation | Explanation |
|---|---|
| AES67 | Audio-over-IP standard. A standard for audio over IP transport and interoperability formulated by the Audio Engineering Society. It is the basis that most modern audio-over-IP standards are based on. |
| Ravenna | Audio-over-IP standard. RAVENNA is a solution for real-time distribution of audio and other media content in IP-based network environments. Utilising standardised network protocols and technologies, RAVENNA can operate in existing network infrastructures and is inherently fully AES67 and SMPTE ST 2110-compliant. |
| Livewire | Audio-over-IP standard. |
| Dante |
Audio-over-IP standard. A suite of protocols for low-latency transport of audio over IP. In aixtream, both dedicated Dante hardware as well as AES67 compatibility mode (using regular Ethernet ports) are supported. |
| DAB | Digital Audio Broadcasting. A standard for broadcasting of digital audio. |
| DVB |
Digital Video Broadcasting. A set of standards for digital television (including radio over TV). In aixtream, DVB is also used to denote MPEG TS transport more generally. |
| HLS | HTTP Live Streaming. Media streaming protocol. |
| Icecast | Audio streaming protocol. |
| DASH | Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. Media streaming protocol. |
| ngLC | next-generation Loudness Control. A proprietary loudness adaption algorithm developed by Ferncast and based on EBU R.128. |
| MPEG TS |
MPEG transport stream. A digital container format for storage and transport of media data. In aixtream, MPEG TS encapsulation is handled by the DVB sink element. |
| MPTS | Multi-program Transport Stream. An MPEG TS containing multiple separate media programs. |
| RTP | Real-time Transport Protocol. An IP protocol for transport of media over networks. |
| SAP |
Session Announcement Protocol. An announcement protocol for advertising multicast sessions. See here for more details on the SAP protocol. |
| SDP | Session Description Protocol. An internet protocol for announcement and invitation of multimedia connections. Defined in RFC 8866. |
| SMPTE 2110 | Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers 2110. A suite of standards related to media transport over IP. Multiple SMPTE 2110 standards are relevant to aixtream, most importantl redundant streaming over IP. |
| SPTS | Single-program Transport Stream. An MPEG TS containing a single media program. |
| SRT | Secure Reliable Transport. An open-source media transport protocol. Compared to legacy standards, SRT offers an especially reliable and secure transport thanks to inbuilt error correction and encryption features. Originally defined here. |
| TTL |
Time To Live. This is a value that defines how long an IP datagram can exist in a network. Practically, it sets a limit on how many routers/switches the IP packets can pass. In the context of aixtream, it is mainly relevant to the configuration of IP data and media streams which often allow you to configure a TTL. Also known as “hop limit”. |
| UDP | User Datagram Protocol. Communication protocol that is part of IP communication. |
| WebRTC | Web Real-Time Communication. A technology for media transport between web browsers and mobile applications. Most modern communication and conferencing apps use WebRTC. Define here. |
| URL | Uniform Resource Locator. An established method for identifying a specific resource in the world wide web. In aixtream it is mostly relevant as part of the URL source element to restream an existing online audio stream. Originally defined here. |
