This is an encoder (yellow) element. It encodes the audio according to the G.711 A-law standard. For the µ-law version, see here.

G.711 is a narrowband audio codec originally designed for use in telephony. It is an ITU-T standard for audio encoding. There are two distinct companding algorithms: µ-law and A-law. Both use a 64 kbit/s bitrate. Nowadays it is rarely used, except as a backup codec for SIP or RTP communication when Opus is not an option. See here for more details on the standard. |
